Restorative Care
Why treat TMJ?
1. Improve quality of life: TMJ disorder can be painful. Treatment can help prevent chronic pain and make your day to day life more enjoyable.
2. Prevent joint damage: Constant strain on your jaw can lead to joint damage. If left untreated, joint damage can slowly deteriorate your bone density
3. Prevent tooth damage: The pressure put on your teeth from TMJ dysfunction can damage and even break your teeth. Grinding of teeth can also strip away layers
of your teeth.
What is TMJ Therapy?
TMJ therapy is the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder. There is no cure for TMJ disorder, only ways to mitigate the pain. The TMJ joint is located on each side of your head in front of your ears. Problems with the joint could be from dislocation, degeneration, trauma, damage, arthritis, teeth grinding, diseases of connective tissue, or misaligned teeth.
Regardless of the cause, TMJ disorder can limit jaw movement and cause pain. Other common symptoms may be headaches, ear aches, hearing
clicks or pops, locked jaw, and shifting of the joint.
How is TMJ treated?
We treat TMJ disorder with two combined methods: appliance therapy and behavior
modifications.
Appliance therapy is the use of a custom-made appliance designed to carefully reposition the joint. Periodic appliance adjustment appointments will be necessary for
successful treatment.
Behavior modifications include gradual adjustments to habits that may cause the TMJ joint to be overused. Use of your appliance will help us identify these habits.
TMJ treatment therapy is similar to orthodontic therapy in that it goes beyond the appliances themselves. Just as orthodontics relies on the expertise of a specialist to
properly adjust brackets and wires for optimal results, TMJ therapy depends on the skill of a highly specialized dentist.
Our specialized knowledge and precise adjustments ensure your jaw is aligned correctly, helping you achieve relief and improved comfort.
